The Art Room at Maria Montessori Academy is a space for students to explore creativity, imagination, and self-expression. Beyond learning techniques and working with materials, students use art as a way to reflect, discover, and communicate who they are. This creative process encourages personal growth, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Building Confidence and Communication
The Podium is a space where students develop confidence, collaboration, and public speaking skills. Through regular practice in group presentations and individual speaking opportunities, students learn to communicate effectively, express ideas clearly, and engage with an audience. This hands-on experience helps build poise, leadership, and the interpersonal skills essential for success both inside and outside the classroom.
Community Meetings
In Upper Elementary, students take an active role in shaping their classroom community through regular Community Meetings. These gatherings give students a voice in decision-making, problem-solving, and planning - helping them develop leadership, empathy, and a sense of shared responsibility.
As children grow in independence, they also become more aware of fairness, justice, and the impact of their choices. Community Meetings provide a space to discuss real issues, celebrate successes, and practice respectful dialogue. It’s where students learn that their ideas matter, their voices can create change, and they are part of something bigger than themselves.
Corridor: Building Community and Trust
Our High School corridors feature lock-free lockers, reflecting the culture of trust and responsibility that underpins our community. By encouraging respect, accountability, and cooperation, we teach students that safety and belonging are built through relationships, shared values, and mutual trust — not locks.
Cultural Arts and Learning: Honouring Knowledge and Tradition
Students at Maria Montessori Academy engage in ongoing Sencoten language lessons and explore Indigenous cultural practices through activities such as Lahal (a traditional game), drumming, and storytelling. Classrooms recognize and honor the 13-moon calendar, integrating this understanding into place-based learning experiences that connect students to the rhythms of the natural world.
This program fosters hands-on learning, cultural awareness, and respect for Indigenous knowledge and traditions. By combining language, stories, music, and seasonal observation, students develop creativity, connection, and a meaningful understanding of the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples and their relationship to the land.
Electives: Exploring Passions and Skills
High School students explore a rich range of electives, including Music, Art, Computers, and Foods. Music and Art foster creativity and self-expression, while Computer studies develop digital literacy and coding skills. Foods classes combine hands-on learning with community impact, supporting our Hot Lunch program and giving students meaningful opportunities to contribute. These electives allow students to explore passions, develop new skills, and engage fully in their education.
French Room: Language Learning from the Start
At Maria Montessori Academy, French is taught by specialists beginning in Preschool, giving students an early and immersive introduction to the language. Instruction focuses on developing communication skills, cultural awareness, and a love of language, which students can further explore through our French Club during recess. French is an integral part of our program, supporting cognitive growth, global understanding, and a lifelong appreciation for languages.
Gymnasium
Our gym is the hub for physical education, athletics, and community gatherings. Students build strength, teamwork, and confidence through daily movement, cooperative games, and our dynamic athletics program.
With a mix of recreational and competitive teams, students have opportunities to participate in local meets, jamborees, and city championships. From cross country in the fall to rugby finals in the spring,athletics MMA foster school spirit, healthy lifestyles, and a love of sport. All students in K–10 participate in Physical and Health Education (PHE) classes twice weekly, following the British Columbia provincially mandated curriculum. This ensures every learner receives a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate program that builds both physical literacy and an understanding of personal well-being.
Our specialist PHE educators guide students through a purposeful sequence of units throughout the year. In the early years, the focus is on fundamental movement skills like running, jumping, balancing, throwing, catching, and spatial awareness which build the foundation for safe, confident participation in physical activity.
As students move into the elementary and middle years, they begin to explore a variety of individual and team sports, learning the rules, strategies, and cooperative skills associated with each sport. Older students also engage in units that deepen their understanding of fitness concepts, healthy living, leadership, and personal goal-setting.
Throughout all grades, we work to foster a positive and inclusive environment where students can take risks, build resilience, and experience the joy of movement. Our gymnasium is a space where learners strengthen not just their bodies, but their sense of community, sportsmanship, and self-confidence.
High School Overview: Independent, Collaborative, and Engaged
Maria Montessori Academy’s High School program empowers students to take ownership of their learning while fostering independence, responsibility, and critical thinking. Mixed-age classrooms encourage mentorship and collaboration, and community is central to the adolescent experience. Learning from Knowledge Keepers
Our students are fortunate to learn from Elder Earl Claxton Jr., a botanist and knowledge keeper from the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation, and Ren Louie, an author, drummer, and cultural teacher from the Ahousaht Nation.
Through storytelling, drumming, and hands-on learning, students gain insight into Indigenous perspectives on language, land, and community. These experiences foster respect, gratitude, and understanding; helping students see their learning as part of a larger, living relationship with the world around them.
Library: A Place to Imagine, Explore, and Grow
The Library at Maria Montessori Academy is a welcoming space that nurtures curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong love of reading. It provides students with access to diverse literature and resources that reflect a wide range of voices, perspectives, and experiences. The Library also serves as a place for students to engage thoughtfully with technology. While computer access in elementary classrooms is intentionally limited, students have opportunities to use school laptops in a safe, structured environment, guided by adults, as they explore coding, conduct research, and develop digital literacy skills. The Library supports independent learning, creativity, and critical thinking, encouraging students to make meaningful connections between what they read, discover, and imagine.
Maria Montessori Academy Land Acknowledgement
Maria Montessori Academy is located on the traditional, shared territories of the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples and the Lekwungen-speaking peoples, in Victoria, BC. This land was once home to families who cared for the Garry Oak groves and sustainably managed camas meadows, an important traditional food source. We recognize the significance of this rare and protected ecosystem and honor the families who have cared for it over generations.
As a school community, we acknowledge that we are settlers on this land. We recognize that our presence has impacted the histories, languages, cultures, livelihoods, governance, and well-being of Indigenous peoples. We commit to being responsible stewards of the land and to supporting reconciliation through respect, awareness, and action.
We honor the strength, resilience, and generosity of Indigenous peoples and recognize the ongoing intergenerational impacts of colonization, including the Residential School system. Multi-Purpose Room: A Space for Connection and Community
The Multi-Purpose Room is a flexible gathering space that supports connection, collaboration, and enrichment across the Maria Montessori Academy community. It is often used to bring students together within their cohorts, host guest speakers, authors, and special presentations, and provide a welcoming environment for shared learning experiences.

Our mural, created in collaboration with local artist Misha Smart, is a vibrant reflection of our school community. Students took part in both the design and painting, making it a true celebration of creativity and belonging. Music Program: Inspiring Creativity and Expression
Music at Maria Montessori Academy begins in Preschool, giving students an early foundation in rhythm, melody, and musical expression. The program nurtures creativity, collaboration, and confidence, allowing students to explore a variety of instruments, vocal techniques, and musical styles.
Beyond classroom learning, the Music Program plays a central role in school life, supporting student participation in winter and spring musicals as well as cohort performances in school-wide assemblies. Through these experiences, students develop teamwork, performance skills, and a lifelong appreciation for music and the arts.
Natural Playground
Our natural playground is an extension of the Montessori classroom, an outdoor environment designed to inspire curiosity, exploration, and meaningful movement. Rather than traditional fixed structures, this space offers open-ended materials, varied terrain, logs, boulders, and opportunities for students to create, imagine, and problem-solve through unstructured play.
Here, children are free to explore at their own pace, test their physical abilities, take safe risks, and engage in collaborative games that emerge organically from the environment. This type of play reflects core Montessori principles: fostering independence, nurturing imagination, and supporting the child’s natural developmental needs.
The natural playground invites students to connect with the land, develop physical confidence, and build joyful memories through play that is as dynamic and creative as they are.
Out of School Care: Safe, Supportive, and Engaging
Our Out of School Care program offers a nurturing, play-based environment for students from Preschool through Grade 6. Running from 7:30–8:30 a.m. and 3:00–5:00 p.m. each school day, the program makes use of the Multi-Purpose Room, Library, Learning Commons, and outdoor spaces to provide a balance of recreation, creativity, and social connection. This program reflects our commitment to supporting families and fostering community beyond the regular school day.
Outdoor Education: Learning Beyond the Classroom
Outdoor Education at Maria Montessori Academy fosters curiosity, confidence, and connection with the natural world. Beginning in the early years, students develop a relationship with the outdoors through place-based learning and regular classroom field trips that extend their understanding of the world around them.
As students move into Upper Elementary, they participate in weekly Friday outings that include a wide range of hands-on experiences - from fire and shelter building to archery, hiking, and skiing. The program culminates in a Grade 6 two-night campout that builds independence and teamwork while preparing students for the expanded Outdoor Education program in our Senior School.
At the secondary level, students take part in three week-long Outdoor Education trips each year, deepening their leadership skills and their sense of environmental stewardship. Supported by our fleet of buses, this robust program provides meaningful opportunities to explore, take safe risks, and challenge themselves through “challenge by choice.” Outdoor Education at MMA is not just about adventure, it’s about developing resilience, respect, and a lifelong connection to the natural world.

The Cosmic Curriculum
In the Lower Elementary program, learning expands beyond the classroom walls through the Cosmic Curriculum -a cornerstone of Montessori education. This rich, integrated approach invites children to explore the interconnectedness of all things: from the formation of the universe to the evolution of life, the development of language and mathematics, and the story of human civilization.
Through the Five Great Lessons - imaginative, story-based introductions to big ideas - students are inspired to ask questions, seek connections, and dive deeply into areas of personal interest. The Maze Playground: Imaginative Play in Action
The Maze Playground is a playful, engaging outdoor space designed to inspire creativity, curiosity, and connection. Unlike traditional playgrounds, it doesn’t dictate how children should play or what they should do. Instead, it offers endless possibilities for exploration, climbing, problem-solving, and collaboration. Children move through winding paths, hidden nooks, and open areas, using their imagination to create games, challenges, and adventures. Here, play is child-led, social, and dynamic building not only physical skills but also creativity, resilience, and friendships. The Maze Playground is more than a space to play; it’s a world where every child can imagine, invent, and discover. Building Confidence and Communication
The Podium is a space where students develop confidence, collaboration, and public speaking skills. Through regular practice in group presentations and individual speaking opportunities, students learn to communicate effectively, express ideas clearly, and engage with an audience. This hands-on experience helps build poise, leadership, and the interpersonal skills essential for success both inside and outside the classroom.
Community Meetings
In Upper Elementary, students take an active role in shaping their classroom community through regular Community Meetings. These gatherings give students a voice in decision-making, problem-solving, and planning - helping them develop leadership, empathy, and a sense of shared responsibility.
As children grow in independence, they also become more aware of fairness, justice, and the impact of their choices. Community Meetings provide a space to discuss real issues, celebrate successes, and practice respectful dialogue. Corridor: Building Community and Trust
Our High School corridors feature lock-free lockers, reflecting the culture of trust and responsibility that underpins our community. By encouraging respect, accountability, and cooperation, we teach students that safety and belonging are built through relationships, shared values, and mutual trust — not locks.
Cultural Arts and Learning: Honouring Knowledge and Tradition
Students at Maria Montessori Academy engage in ongoing Sencoten language lessons and explore Indigenous cultural practices through activities such as Lahal (a traditional game), drumming, and storytelling. Classrooms recognize and honor the 13-moon calendar, integrating this understanding into place-based learning experiences that connect students to the rhythms of the natural world.
This program fosters hands-on learning, cultural awareness, and respect for Indigenous knowledge and traditions. By combining language, stories, music, and seasonal observation, students develop creativity, connection, and a meaningful understanding of the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples and their relationship to the land.
Electives: Exploring Passions and Skills
High School students explore a rich range of electives, including Music, Art, Computers, and Foods. Music and Art foster creativity and self-expression, while Computer studies develop digital literacy and coding skills. Foods classes combine hands-on learning with community impact, supporting our Hot Lunch program and giving students meaningful opportunities to contribute. These electives allow students to explore passions, develop new skills, and engage fully in their education.
French Room: Language Learning from the Start
At Maria Montessori Academy, French is taught by specialists beginning in Preschool, giving students an early and immersive introduction to the language. Instruction focuses on developing communication skills, cultural awareness, and a love of language, which students can further explore through our French Club during recess. French is an integral part of our program, supporting cognitive growth, global understanding, and a lifelong appreciation for languages.
Gymnasium
Our gym is the hub for physical education, athletics, and community gatherings. Students build strength, teamwork, and confidence through daily movement, cooperative games, and our dynamic athletics program.
With a mix of recreational and competitive teams, students have opportunities to participate in local meets, jamborees, and city championships. From cross country in the fall to rugby finals in the spring,athletics MMA foster school spirit, healthy lifestyles, and a love of sport. All students in K–10 participate in Physical and Health Education (PHE) classes twice weekly, following the British Columbia provincially mandated curriculum. This ensures every learner receives a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate program that builds both physical literacy and an understanding of personal well-being.
Our specialist PHE educators guide students through a purposeful sequence of units throughout the year. In the early years, the focus is on fundamental movement skills like running, jumping, balancing, throwing, catching, and spatial awareness which build the foundation for safe, confident participation in physical activity.
As students move into the elementary and middle years, they begin to explore a variety of individual and team sports, learning the rules, strategies, and cooperative skills associated with each sport. Older students also engage in units that deepen their understanding of fitness concepts, healthy living, leadership, and personal goal-setting.
Throughout all grades, we work to foster a positive and inclusive environment where students can take risks, build resilience, and experience the joy of movement. Our gymnasium is a space where learners strengthen not just their bodies, but their sense of community, sportsmanship, and self-confidence.

Maria Montessori Academy’s High School program empowers students to take ownership of their learning while fostering independence, responsibility, and critical thinking. Learning from Knowledge Keepers
Our students are fortunate to learn from Elder Earl Claxton Jr., a botanist and knowledge keeper from the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation, and Ren Louie, an author, drummer, and cultural teacher from the Ahousaht Nation.
Through storytelling, drumming, and hands-on learning, students gain insight into Indigenous perspectives on language, land, and community. These experiences foster respect, gratitude, and understanding; helping students see their learning as part of a larger, living relationship with the world around them.
Library: A Place to Imagine, Explore, and Grow
The Library at Maria Montessori Academy is a welcoming space that nurtures curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong love of reading. It provides students with access to diverse literature and resources that reflect a wide range of voices, perspectives, and experiences. The Library also serves as a place for students to engage thoughtfully with technology. While computer access in elementary classrooms is intentionally limited, students have opportunities to use school laptops in a safe, structured environment, guided by adults, as they explore coding, conduct research, and develop digital literacy skills. The Library supports independent learning, creativity, and critical thinking, encouraging students to make meaningful connections between what they read, discover, and imagine.
Maria Montessori Academy Land Acknowledgement
Maria Montessori Academy is located on the traditional, shared territories of the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples and the Lekwungen-speaking peoples, in Victoria, BC. This land was once home to families who cared for the Garry Oak groves and sustainably managed camas meadows, an important traditional food source. We recognize the significance of this rare and protected ecosystem and honor the families who have cared for it over generations.
As a school community, we acknowledge that we are settlers on this land. We recognize that our presence has impacted the histories, languages, cultures, livelihoods, governance, and well-being of Indigenous peoples. We commit to being responsible stewards of the land and to supporting reconciliation through respect, awareness, and action.
We honor the strength, resilience, and generosity of Indigenous peoples and recognize the ongoing intergenerational impacts of colonization, including the Residential School system. Music at Maria Montessori Academy begins in Preschool, giving students an early foundation in rhythm, melody, and musical expression. The program nurtures creativity, collaboration, and confidence, allowing students to explore a variety of instruments, vocal techniques, and musical styles.
Beyond classroom learning, the Music Program plays a central role in school life, supporting student participation in winter and spring musicals as well as cohort performances in school-wide assemblies. Natural Playground
Our natural playground is an extension of the Montessori classroom, an outdoor environment designed to inspire curiosity, exploration, and meaningful movement. Rather than traditional fixed structures, this space offers open-ended materials, varied terrain, logs, boulders, and opportunities for students to create, imagine, and problem-solve through unstructured play.
Here, children are free to explore at their own pace, test their physical abilities, take safe risks, and engage in collaborative games that emerge organically from the environment. This type of play reflects core Montessori principles: fostering independence, nurturing imagination, and supporting the child’s natural developmental needs.

Out of School Care: Safe, Supportive, and Engaging
Our Out of School Care program offers a nurturing, play-based environment for students from Preschool through Grade 6. Running from 7:30–8:30 a.m. and 3:00–5:00 p.m. each school day, the program makes use of the Multi-Purpose Room, Library, Learning Commons, and outdoor spaces to provide a balance of recreation, creativity, and social connection. This program reflects our commitment to supporting families and fostering community beyond the regular school day.
Outdoor Education: Learning Beyond the Classroom
Outdoor Education at Maria Montessori Academy fosters curiosity, confidence, and connection with the natural world. Beginning in the early years, students develop a relationship with the outdoors through place-based learning and regular classroom field trips that extend their understanding of the world around them.
As students move into Upper Elementary, they participate in weekly Friday outings that include a wide range of hands-on experiences - from fire and shelter building to archery, hiking, and skiing. The program culminates in a Grade 6 two-night campout that builds independence and teamwork while preparing students for the expanded Outdoor Education program in our Senior School.
At the secondary level, students take part in three week-long Outdoor Education trips each year, deepening their leadership skills and their sense of environmental stewardship. Supported by our fleet of buses, this robust program provides meaningful opportunities to explore, take safe risks, and challenge themselves through “challenge by choice.” Outdoor Education at MMA is not just about adventure, it’s about developing resilience, respect, and a lifelong connection to the natural world.

In the Lower Elementary program, learning expands beyond the classroom walls through the Cosmic Curriculum -a cornerstone of Montessori education. Instead, it offers endless possibilities for exploration, climbing, problem-solving, and collaboration. Children move through winding paths, hidden nooks, and open areas, using their imagination to create games, challenges, and adventures. Here, play is child-led, social, and dynamic building not only physical skills but also creativity, resilience, and friendships. The Maze Playground is more than a space to play; it’s a world where every child can imagine, invent, and discover.
